“Development should be sustainable, and benefit future generations. Science and technology researchers in the country are ready to welcome the youth to do their part,” said Deputy Collector S. Saranya as she inaugurated Nalaiya Vignani- The Future Scientist, a competition for young innovators in the city on Sunday.

The event organised by The Hindu Tamil, VIT University and Tamil Nadu Science Forum at National College attracted 1,000 students.

About 165 school students from Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Karur, Ariyalur and Perambalur showcased projects on topics that included ‘How to reroute the Cauvery,’ and ‘why do birds destroy crops’.

A team evaluated the presentations and chose 25 exhibits for awards.

V. Rajasekhar, scientist, Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, addressed the students and urged them to cultivate reading habit.

“We should read everything with focus. Whether it is casual reading or studying, goals must be set and followed. Always question what you do not understand,” he said. Mr. Rajasekhar also explained the operation of Chandrayaan I and II to the students.

S. Dinakaran, president, Tamil Nadu Science Forum, National College principal R. Sundararaman, professors and over 200 teachers from participating schools took part in the event.
