Scheme hailed

Thanjavur District Unit of the Tamil Maanila Vivasaya Thozhilalar Sangam affiliated to the CPI has welcomed the expanded social security scheme for farmers and agriculture workers announced by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. "We hail the issue of identity cards to head and members of the family of agriculture labourers by the government," said G.Krishnan, district president, and Pakkirisamy, secretary of the Sangam in a release here on Monday. However, they demanded enactment of a legislation to make it mandatory for future government to continue the scheme. They also wanted Rs. 1,000 to be paid as pension per month to all the farmers who have crossed 60 years of age. They welcomed the educational assistance for the children of farmers and marriage and maternity assistance.
