A Kanniyakumari-based sculptor spent over five hours and 10 tonnes of sand to create a sand sculpture on the Cauvery river bed.
The message of the sculptor, P. Sasivarma, 39, is simple. To create awareness among voters on ethical voting and the need to exercise their franchise without fail.
The sculpture depicts the image of Parliament, with an electronic voting machine (EVM) in the middle, on the dry Cauvery river bed near Srirangam. It was done at the behest of Sibi Aditya, Sub-Collector, Srirangam, to create awareness of voting.
The sculpture attracted the attention of passers-by and walkers on the Cauvery bridge from Chinthamani to Mambalasalai. Since the sculpture can be seen from the bridge, walkers and bikers took a closer look.
“It is a novel attempt. The artist has brought out his talent to design the image of Parliament. We will be happy if his message makes an impact on at least 25% of the people who stop to view it,” said Tiruchi Collector S. Sivarasu after taking a look at the sculpture.
Sasivarma said he chose the image of Parliament as it was popular among the people. It was the best image to reach out to them. He had also depicted the date of polling in the work. “Each and every eligible voter should make it a point to visit the polling booths to exercise their democratic right,” he said.
Mr. Sasivarma said he had created sand sculptures of various images on the beaches of Chennai, Goa and Thiruvananthapuram on various occasions.
