The Highways Department has taken up the work of widening and re-laying the four-km stretch between Samayapuram and Mannachanallur via Tiruppainjeeli Road.
The work, which was taken up about a couple of weeks ago at an estimate of Rs. 2.40 crore, is expected to be completed by two months, according to sources.
The widening and re-laying of the road has become imperative in the wake of increase in the volume of traffic on this route.
Further, a narrow and weak culvert on the stretch is being re-constructed. The new length of the minor bridge is 9.80 metre and its length is 16 metres, providing adequate space for two-way traffic on this road. Apart from ensuring free flow of traffic, the bridge would facilitate immediate drain of storm water during monsoon period.
A number of rice mills are located on this stretch and the widening of the minor bridge and the road would go a long way for safe transport by heavy vehicles including trucks laden with paddy or rice.
