Ruckus at DK meeting, 16 arrested

Sixteen persons - nine from Hindu front organisations and seven from Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) - were arrested in connection with a ruckus at a meeting organised by the DK here on Thursday night. Cases were slapped against both sides by the Gandhi Market police on receipt of separate complaints.

The incident took place during a meeting organised by the DK at Keerakkadai bazaar in support of the DMK-headed Secular Progressive Alliance's Tiruchi Parliamentary constituency Congress nominee Su. Thirunavukkarasar.

As the meeting was under way, a group of Hindu Front cadre who descended on the scene protested against certain derogatory remarks on Lord Krishna allegedly made by DK president K. Veeramani recently.

A dozen Hindu front cadre were detained by the police on Thursday night after they created a ruckus and allegedly flung chairs and slippers besides pelting stones, injuring three persons, triggering tension and warranting police intervention.

The group raised slogans against Mr. Veeramani, who was not present at that time, demanding that the meeting be called off. The DK leader, who arrived later, addressed the meeting amid police protection.

However, as he was leaving, a few persons blocked his vehicle and banged it besides allegedly abusing him, sparking more tension. Police removed the protesters from the spot. A posse of police personnel was deployed at the spot monitored by Commissioner of Police A. Amalraj.

The Gandhi Market police registered cases against both sides on the basis of complaints preferred by each. Police sources said a case under IPC sections, including 147 (rioting) 341 (wrongful restraint) 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) 336 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others) 506 (i) (criminal intimidation) read with 127 (1) of The Representation of The People Act, was slapped against 50 members of the BJP and Hindu front members on a complaint preferred by M. Arumugam, a DK member.

Sources said a case against eight persons belonging to the DK, including its State general secretary Arivukkarasu and district president Arockiaraj, was booked under IPC sections, including 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 147 (rioting),324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others).
