Rs. 229 cr sanctioned for medical college in Karur

Rs. 25 crore sanctioned this financial yearto take up first phase of construction

The State government has issued an order for construction of buildings at a cost of Rs. 229.46 crore for the Karur Medical College at Kuppuchipalayam near Vangal on the outskirts of Karur.

A highly placed source told The Hindu that the college would be built on 25 acres of donated land. It had been registered and the land ownership transferred to the Director of Medical Education (DME).

For the current year (2015-16), the State government has allocated Rs. 25 crore to take up first phase of construction work. The Public Works Department (PWD) would take up the construction works.

The PWD, which was embarking on finalising the design of the hospital buildings, would float a pan-country tender in January.

It was likely to float short tender so as to start the construction work before February 2016. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced a medical college for Karur in the State Assembly in 2014.

Following the announcement, the State government had issued an order to convert the existing government hospital in Karur as government medical college hospital from the Directorate of Medical Services (DMS) a few months ago.

Since then, the Directorate of Medical Education has been controlling the administration of the hospital.

All doctors and paramedical staff members of the hospital had been brought under the control of DME.

The government hospital in Karur has 240 beds and has 61 doctors on clinical side. Construction of additional block to accommodate 60 more beds is under way. It is likely to be completed within February. With this, the number of beds in Karur Medical College hospital will go up to 300, sources said.
