Rengaraj, 53, a head constable of Railway Protection Force (RPF), who was stabbed by his neighbour at Palayanallur near Mannachanallur three days ago, succumbed to injuries at Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital here on Tuesday night.

Mannachanallur Police arrested Kovendran, 35, and his father Vannamani, 60, on the charge of attacking the head constable and initially registered a case against them under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder). They have now altered it as a case of murder, said police sources.

Rengaraj and Kovendran were neighbours and there was a long-standing dispute between them on using a small lane dividing their residences. On Saturday evening, a wordy quarrel erupted between them and Kovendran allegedly stabbed the constable with a sharp weapon.

Rengaraj was serving with the RPF in Thanjavur.
