Heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning and thunder, inundated several low-lying areas in the city and threw vehicular traffic out of gear on Wednesday.

The loud rumble of thunder and streaks of lightning across the sky forced people on the roads to scamper for cover in the afternoon.

Motorists found it difficult to navigate through water-logged stretches at many places including TVS Toll Gate, Gandhi Market, Junction, Chathiram Bus Stand area and Thillai Nagar. This resulted in traffic jams in Cantonment area, Collectorate Road, and Srirangam Bus Stand.

The Central Workshop for State Express Transport Corporation was water-logged from the entrance.

 The skies later opened up and several areas became water-logged in the heavy downpour, affecting movement of vehicles.

Due to poor visibility, vehicles had to use headlights. Two-wheelers were out of sight for over an hour due to the continous downpour.

A compound wall collapsed at VOC Nagar in Tiruverumbur town. Power supply was cut off at several locations in the city during the thunderstorm.

Prior to the thunderstorm, there were indications of heavy rainfall as cool wind began to blow and the sky became overcast with dark clouds.

The heavy rain for more than an hour brought down the temperature significantly and brought respite to the residents who had been suffering under severe heat wave conditions that prevailed till noon.
