The Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, has urged the district Collector and the Corporation Commissioner to constitute a committee to review all the building plan approvals given in the city over the past eight years and cancel approvals in cases where there are violations.
In a statement issued here in the wake of the collapse of a building near the Nathervali Dargah in the city on Thursday, S.Pushpavanam, Secretary, Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, said regulation of land-use and construction of buildings is the primary responsibility of the Corporation. Alleging that irregularities were being overlooked, he said that another building had collapsed in the vicinity of the Dargah about a couple of years back.
No construction could be allowed in lanes of just three to four feet width. Not even an autorickshaw can enter the place. If the collapsed structure had been built without approval, the question arises how the property was assessed for tax and electricity connection was given. Officials who allowed the construction should be held responsible, he demanded.
