Restoration work picks up pace in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur

Restoration works were on in full swing in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts on Sunday.

The works on restoring roads, electric poles and drinking water supply were being monitored in Thanjavur district by the Principal Secretary, Department of School Education, Pradeep Yadav.

District Collector A. Annadurai said Pattukottai, Athirampattinam, Peravoorani, Orathanadu, Sethupavachathiram, Madukkur were the worst affected parts.

A total of 8226 displaced persons have been accommodated in 34 relief camps. Deaths of five persons due to the cyclone have been confirmed, he said.

As per police reports, 16 more had died, he said.

The district authorities have also confirmed the deaths of 40 cows, 11 buffaloes, 98 goats, 117 sheep, eight oxen and 12 calves.

A total of 6,265 huts have been fully damaged and 11,157 huts suffered partial damage. About 13,385 tiled houses were damaged. The damage of road was to the extent of 191.4 km.

Trees that had fallen on roads to a cumulative length of 2,017 km have been removed. Of the fallen trees, 36,600 were in forest area, and 31,482 in other areas.

As many as 4,469 workers have been deployed to remove trees in the remaining parts. As many as 109 mechanised saws, 177 JCP machines, one bulldozer, 37 poclains, 51 lorries, 18 generators, and 96 generators were being utilised to remove the trees, the Collector said.

About 8,748 electric poles, 200 km length electric wires, 15 transformers, and the sub-station at Pattukottai have been damaged.

Power has been restored to the extent of 65 percent in Thanjavur Corporation limits and 100 per cent in Kumbakonam municipality limits. In town panchayats and village panchayats, only 20 per cent power could be restored, Mr. Annadurai said.

Along the coastal villages, 61 mechanised boats were partially damaged and 175 mechanised boats were fully damaged. Twenty seven country boats were fully damaged and 696 were damaged partially. About 194 engines and 517 nets were destroyed, he said.

The loss of crops was huge. The cyclone had damaged 12,500 hectares of paddy fields, 270 hectares maize, and 350 hectares sugarcane fields. Coconut trees in 25,004 hectares, oil palm in 20 hectares, and banana, cashew, taopica grown in 2218 hectares were destroyed.

In view of the restoration works, the district administration has declared a holiday for schools, the Collector said.

Tiruvarur

In Tiruvarur district, Food Minister K. Kamaraj distributed relief materials to displaced people accommodated at a centre in Tiruneiper Panchayat Union.

District Collector Nirmal Raj said the worst affected areas were Mangudi, Thenvarayanallur, Tiruneiper, Kunniyur and Mavoor.

The Minister also visited several other relief camps and gave assurances to the people about quick restoration of the damages.
