Renovation of the ‘Poigai kulam’ of Sri Dharbaranyeswarar Temple, popularly known as Sri Saneeswarar temple in Tirunallar, is in full swing.
It is one of the five major tanks at Tirunallar, the other four being Nalan Kulam, Yaman theertham, Saraswathi theertham and Brahmma kulam. While Nalan Kulam, Saraswathi theertham and Brahmma theertham have been renovated and are being maintained, work on Yaman theertham was completed recently.
According to temple sources, the Poigai kulam — spread over about five cents — is the collection centre of the holy ‘abhishekam’ water from the shrines dedicated to Sri Dharbaranyeswarar, Sri Pranambika, Sri Saneeswarar, Sri Ganapathy and Sri Thyagarajar. “Not even a trickle of water is let out,” a source told The Hindu on Sunday, explaining the structural phenomenon of the temple.
Over the years, the tank remained neglected, resulting in the water getting polluted. Hence, temple authorities decided to renovate it under the Tirunallar Temple City Development Project. “The entire water will be pumped out, and the banks of the tank strengthened and beautified,” the source said.
Steps for ‘padithurai’ will also be constructed as part of beautification. The work is scheduled to be completed before ‘Sani Peyarchi.’
