Release cadre immediately: CPI (M)

February 17, 2012 11:45 am | Updated 11:45 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Condemning the booking of “false case” and the arrest of Communist Party of India (Marxist) members who had gone to hold talks with the law enforcers and the transport department authorities after a private bus fatally knocked down a vegetable vendor in the city triggering protest, the CPI (M) has sought the immediate release of the arrested party functionaries.

In a statement issued here, the CPI (M) district secretary S. Sridhar urged the Collector and police to intervene and take steps to release the arrested party members besides seeking withdrawal of the “false case” registered against them.

He said the general public blocked the road near Bheema Nagar following the fatal accident caused by the private town bus demanding that steps be taken to check rash driving by private buses and curtail accidents.

A team from the CPI (M) went to the accident spot and were holding talks with the law enforcers and Transport Department officials when the police suddenly used force to disperse the public and the party members and arrested the CPI (M) functionaries, he claimed.

He said the party's district committee condemns the use of force against the public and CPI (M) members who had gone to hold talks .

Over-speeding by private buses led to accidents in the city frequently, he said adding that these buses violated traffic rules.

He urged the police and Transport department authorities to take stern action against buses violating road rules.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations, Tiruchi has appealed to the State government to direct the City Police to release those who had been arrested and withdraw the case booked against them.
