The newly appointed Tiruchi Corporation Commissioner S. Sivasubramanian, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) Managing Director and Tiruchi Smart City Ltd Chairman C. N. Mahesvaran inspected the Chathram bus stand redevelopment works under the Smart City Mission in the city on Thursday.

The bus stand, which is currently located in an area of 2.95 acres will be redeveloped into a two-storey modern bus station with parking facilities for two-wheelers, 30 bus bays and a food court. Temporary bus stands have been set up around the area for use by the public.

The redeveloped bus stand would also have a waiting hall, ticket counters, five shops and a resting area for police personnel on the ground floor. The basement would have a parking lot with a capacity to accommodate about 350 two-wheelers.

The first floor has been earmarked for commercial establishments.

A total of 53 shopkeepers at the bus stand have been asked to vacate. The new structure will have around 30 shops in total.

Mr. Mahesvaran said that the project will be completed in 24 months after which the bus stand would be reopened.
