Braving squally weather, shoppers flocked N.S.B Road and other leading commercial streets in the city on Sunday to make the last-minute purchase for Deepavali festival that falls on Tuesday.
The intermittent rain did not dampen the surging crowd, although senior citizens were put to hardship because of the inclement weather.
The shopping district comprising N.S.B road, Big Bazaar, Chinna Kadai Street, Nandi Koil Street, Singarathope, which account for 20 per cent of the total business turnover in the city, were flooded with shoppers.
The last two days of Deepavali are said to be the delight of traders as a section of people tend to go for shopping to cash in on last minute rebate by textile traders, particularly the hawkers. It being a Sunday added to the frenzy at the shopping district. Although some traders were disappointed because of the rain, many did brisk business on Sunday.
With the huge crowd standing in queues in front of the major textile showrooms on N.S.B. Road, the crowd was moving at a snail’s pace to reach their preferred shops. The trade reached a feverish pitch at night.
Scores of vendors, who had set up temporary shops along the sides of N.S.B. Road and others, drew shoppers, who were seen indulging in hard bargaining. Similarly, cracker shops and sweet stalls, which had sprung up in different parts of the city, drew big crowds.
