Quiz on metals attracts enthusiasts from 73 schools

The 20th edition of TMAQ XI quiz on metals and materials organised by the Indian Institute of Metals – Tiruchi at seven centres across Tamil Nadu besides Puducherry and Kariakal could attract over 400 higher secondary students from 73 schools.

The semi-finals and finals were recently conducted at the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi (NIT-T). Forty-eight semi-finalists were divided into 24 teams and their abilities were determined by N.Rajasekaran, G.Rajendran, N.Parameswaran and Dr R.Vaideeswaran. Six were selected through multimedia rounds.

Prior to the finals that was preceded by 10 rounds of quizzing on various facets of materials, simple elements to complex alloys; simple manufacturing processes to nano-materials; laws and phenomena in physics and chemistry to the current news in the world of materials, a presentation was made by the students of NIT about the opportunities available for studies, research and jobs in the field of materials science.

Creating awareness

The event aiming to create awareness among school children about materials and materials science, qualifies excelling teams to represent their respective chapters in the Annual International Bram Prakash memorials Materials Quiz at IGCAR, Kalpakkam.

The team of S.B.Viswesh and S.Shanmuga Guru of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Rajapalayam, won the coveted TMAQ award. Students of Shri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal Silver Jubilee Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tirunelveli, A.S Pon Aravindhan and U.Vignesh wrested the second prize. The third prize was won by R.Magesh and A.Hemnath of Jawahar Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Neyveli. These three teams received cash prizes of Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively.

Presiding over the prize-distributing session, S.Karunakaran, General Manager, BHEL, Tiruchi, and Immediate Past Chairman, IIM, Tiruchi Chapter, observed that the event benefitted the student community immensely. Honouring the prize-winners, the Director of NIT-T S.Sundarrajan explained about increasing use of special alloys for defence applications. R.Easwaran, Vice Chairman, IIM, Tiruchi, and Chairman, TMAQ XI, was the quiz master.

The IIM Tiruchi Chapter felicitated Jwala Jayendran, winner of All India Elocution contest conducted by IIM, Kolkata. Jwala Jayendran of Shri Jayandra Saraswathi Swamigal Silver Jubilee Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tirunelveli, emerged first among 26 participants in the event.
