Following persistent complaints over poor sanitary conditions at the Puthur market, one of the major markets in the city, the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has taken up repair and renovation works at the market complex.

The market, housing separate sections for vegetable, fish, and chicken stalls, have long been neglected with poor amenities and infrastructure. Poor sanitation had been the bane of the market.

The repairs taken up by the corporation seek to rectify the problem caused by the poor drainage system at the market.

“The drains from the market were clogged and inadequate. There was no proper disposal. Besides, there were complaints of water logging at times of rain. The works would mainly address the problem,” said a corporation official.

According to corporation sources, estimates had been prepared for about Rs. 47.50 lakh for the renovation work at the market. The work would include renovation of the drains around the market, widening of the disposal drain, replacement of cut-stones with concrete flooring inside the market and repairs to the roof.

A couple of public toilets inside the market would also be renovated, the sources said.

Some of the traders inside the market, while welcoming the corporation move, demanded steps to ensure that traders did not operate on the roads outside the market. Some of the chicken traders and vegetable vendors occupy the roadsides outside the market rather than using their shops inside. This caused congestion around the market, a put off for customers, they said.

Meanwhile, the corporation proposal to build a modern wholesale fish market in the city is yet to take off. Although the corporation had initially planned to build the complex at Thennur Anna Nagar, it decided to set up the facility at Kasivilangi along the Kuzhumani Road. The market is to be designed by the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation and according to corporation sources the project would take off soon.

“We have already forwarded the type design and are awaiting approval,” the official said.

The fish market receives over 50 lorries of seafood on most days, especially on Saturdays and Sundays from coastal areas in Nagapattinam and Pudukottai districts. Retail traders from neighbouring districts of Tiruchi make their purchases from here.

Fifteen wholesale traders and about 20 retailers operate out of the market built several years ago and consumers have to brave the stench and unhygienic conditions to make their purchases. Residents living around the market have been complaining over the dumping of garbage around the market.
