Proposals for passenger ropeway being readied

Proposals for establishing a passenger ropeway between Srirangam temple town and Rockfort, river front development and promotion of medical tourism and an innovation hub figure among 10 thrust areas in the Tiruchi District Development Plan, are being readied by Indian Institute of Management - Tiruchi to transform the city into an attractive destination.

The plan being drafted by faculty of IIM-Tiruchi based on inputs provided by Confederation of Indian Industries - Tiruchi Zone will be released during July-August, Director of the Institute Bhimaraya Metri said.

Prof. Metri who chaired a recent meeting of stake-holders at an intensive workshop last week said inputs from representatives of industry, tourism, hospitality and other sectors have been gathered for preparation of the plan.

Forty senior delegates of CII-Tiruchi Zone took part in the workshop and presented their development plans.

Discussions were held for each development plan for moving a step forward in making Tiruchi a hub for industrial investment, Prof. Metri said, adding: "Tiruchi is strong on five broad areas -education, connectivity, cultural heritage, SME industrial belt and talent base. Tiruchi can become an innovation hub and attractive destination if we work on transportation, tourism, medical tourism, IT park and life-long learning facilities for upskilling and reskilling."

The CII and IIM-Tiruchi will together leverage the advantages accruing from improved connectivity and the region's reputation as an educational hub.

"With the air-connectivity improving, CII Tiruchi Zone will prevail upon major IT companies to establish base here," A.S. Ananthakrishnan, president of CII Tiruchi Zone said. The Tiruchi District Development Plan envisages creating an eco-system for commercialising innovative ideas, he said.

The workshop in IIM-Tiruchi was attended by faculties of the institute, teachers from National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi, representatives of Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries' Association, BHEL Small Industries' Association, leading traders, and proprietors of front-ranking hotels.
