June 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The MGR Nalpani Mandram has urged Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to take steps to prevent pollution of the Cauvery in towns such as Erode, Tiruchi, Kumbakonam, and Mayiladuthurai. In a statement here, N. Ramakrishnan, founder secretary, of the organisation, said the Cauvery was subject to heavy pollution at Chinthamani where sewage was let out. The Public Works Department, the corporation, and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board have turned a blind eye to the problem. Apart from catering to the irrigation requirements of the delta, the river was the main drinking water source for lakhs of people. The State government should take steps to check the pollution to the river, he said. _ Special Correspondent
