The PMK will lead a legal fight to get Kadiramangalam in Thanjavur district declared a protected zone by the National Green Tribunal, party MP Anbumani Ramadoss said here on Friday.

The PMK’s green wing Pasumai Thayagam would take up the cause, he said. Kadiramangalam was in the news recently as groups protested the ONGC bid to carry out maintenance works in the oil well situated in the village. Heavy police protection and continued protests marked the issue that keeps festering.

Dr. Anbumani who visited the village and interacted with the people there said that he understood the sentiments of the villagers in protecting their village from exploitation. He condemned the attitude of the police in ensuring that the villagers were kept inside their houses and not allowed to move freely when the operations were carried out.

Claiming that the Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had replied to his question on Neduvasal issue that it has been planned to explore hydrocarbon in 37 places in Tamil Nadu, Dr. Anbumani said that the people have been waging a battle to thwart that move and declare the entire Cauvery delta a protected agricultural zone. The party’s green wing would move the National Green Tribunal to get Kadiramangalam listed a protected zone and work towards driving out ONGC from Kadiramangalam. Besides, the PMK leader promised that he would raise the issue during the next Parliament session.

PMK leader G. Aalayamani and others were present during Dr. Anbumani’s interaction with the villagers.
