The Papanasam Rail Passengers Association has called upon the Railway Board to provide a stoppage at Papanasam for the Antyodaya Express services operated between Tambaram and Nagarcoil, for the benefit of tourists and general public.
As the service (train number 16191) originating from Tambaram crosses Papanasam around 4-30 a.m. it would be of immense help to devotees heading for Thirukarukavur and other `Navagraha’ temples located in Papanasam taluk, from Chennai.
Similarly, in the return direction (train number 16192) stoppage of the train that crosses Papanasam around midnight would be helpful, the association secretary, T. Saravanan pointed out.
Providing a halt at Papanasam for the Antyodaya Express would also bring some succour to the general public heading towards Chennai because as of now they have to rely on the only night service `Uzhavan Express’ running between Thanjavur and Chennai Egmore, he added.
Earlier, another night train service that was available for commuters originating from Papanasam to reach Chennai – the `Mannai Express’ - was diverted via. Tiruvarur after reaching Mayiladuthurai after completion of the guage conversion work between Mayiladuthurai and Tiruvarur.
