Plastic cups, carry bags seized

Officials of the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation seized about Rs. 1 lakh worth of plastic cups and carry bags from various shops and godowns in Srirangam on Wednesday. The seizures were made during surprise checks conducted by a team led by Innasi Muthu, Assistant Commissioner in Srirangam. The drive was part of the corporation’s efforts to check sale of products made of plastics below 40 microns in thickness. A corporation release said about Rs. 4 lakh worth of plastic products have been seized in the city. The drive against the use of banned plastic products would continue along with awareness initiatives, Corporation Commissioner M. Vijayalakshmi said.

Free catering

The Oxford Catering and Hotel Management Industrial School, Pulivalam, has announced that it would extend free catering training for students from below the poverty line families, destitute and those who had lost one or both parents. Cent per cent waiver of tuition fee would be offered to such students. Students with a pass in class 8 and above and in the age group of 14 to 30 are eligible to undergo the programme. Insure crops,

farmers urged

District Collector K.S. Palanisamy has appealed to farmers to insure their crops without fail. Farmers should insure their crop within a month of cultivation and the last date for payment of premium for crop insurance for the samba paddy season is December 15, he said. Farmers who avail crop loans would be covered mandatorily under the crop insurance scheme and they would be extended 50 per cent subsidy in the premium by the State government. Farmers who do not avail crop loan would be extended 55 per cent subsidy in the premium.
