Permanent solution?

NHAI has received a suggestion from the State government that alongside laying service road from Palpannai to Thuvakudi, it should explore the possibility of building elevated highway as a permanent measure, according to officials.

The long-pending demand of the local public could be fulfilled with minimal acquisition of land, which will ultimately reduce the requirement of funds for land acquisition, the State Government is learnt to have said in a communication to NHAI during 2017.

It will be enough if the elevated road is constructed for a 10-km stretch from Palpannai to Tiruverumbur. Beyond there till Thuvakkudi, ample government land is available for laying of wide service roads, said Samson Mathew, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NIT-T) who conducted a study on ways to reduce accidents along the 14.5 km stretch.

Motorists say the elevated road must be given serious thought since accidents occur mainly due to momentum of speed maintained by those who take Thanjavur Road from Chennai Bypass road. Moreover, an elevated road on the stretch will also be of immense utility for BHEL to transport its materials beyond the city limits.
