July 10, 2012 02:40 pm | Updated 02:40 pm IST - TIRUCHI:

Investigation is continuing as per the law in a case against AIADMK MLA M.Paranjothi, the prosecution submitted before a Judicial Magistrate court here on Monday. The case had been filed against the MLA on a complaint lodged by a woman doctor of Tiruchi.

The submission was made when the case came up for hearing before the Judicial Magistrate – IV court on Monday. Magistrate Rajaram had last month directed that the investigating officer should be present in the court on July 9 and posted the case for next hearing on that date. The prosecution submitted that it was awaiting a report from the forensic laboratory and once it received the report it could file a charge sheet. After hearing the arguments of both sides, the Judicial Magistrate – IV court posted the case for next hearing on August 17. The Government Hospital police station here had registered a case against Mr.Paranjothi and two others in December 2011 on a direction from the same court after Dr.Rani preferred a complaint claiming that she was his second wife. The doctor also claimed that Mr.Paranjothi had grabbed money and other valuable properties on various occasions from her and accused him of threatening her.

The case was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 493 (cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage) 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating) 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation), 294 (b) (uttering obscene words) 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and Women Harassment Act.

Mr.Paranjothi was elected from the Tiruchi West Assembly constituency in the by-election held in October last year and was made Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments.

After the case was booked against him, Mr.Paranjothi resigned as Minister citing personal reasons in December. He also stepped down from his position as Tiruchi urban district secretary.
