Orientation programmes postponed

The UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Bharathidasan University, has postponed two orientation programmes that was scheduled from May 22 to June 11, as the UGC has not yet issued new guidelines for HRDCs.

As per the tentative schedule, two orientation programmes and two refresher courses for Tamil Language and Literature, and Life Sciences were scheduled to coincide with summer vacation. The revised dates will be notified after issuance of new guidelines by the UGC, S. Senthinathan, Director, UGC-HRDC, and Associate Professor of Educational Technology, Bharathidasan University, said.

According to draft guidelines, faculty members working in universities and colleges that are included under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, even though they may not yet be fit under Section 12 (B), may be invited to participate in the orientation and refresher courses. Teachers of colleges that do not come within the purview of Section 2(f) but have been affiliated to a university for at least five years will be permitted to participate in the courses, the draft guideline states.

A committee is in the process of considering suggestions given by stakeholders. The guidelines are expected to be issued in a week, he said. The HRDCs in other State universities have shelved the orientation programmes for the same reason.

Almost all orientation programmes, refresher courses, short-term courses and workshops proposed by the HRDC of Bharathidasan University have been approved by the UGC. Of the four workshops approved by the UGC, one for principals, the second for academic administrators, the third for Ph.D. scholars and post-doctoral scholars, and the fourth for section officers, assistant registrars, and deputy registrars. The last workshop was a unique one, he said.
