Keeping in view the ever rising passenger traffic at the railway junction, the Tiruchi Railway Division has constructed a Basic Amenities Complex which was inaugurated here on Wednesday.

Taking into account the lack of deluxe facilities inside the station, the new amenities centre provides for the travellers, a full fledged bathroom inclusive of shower and round-the-clock hot water connection. The centre also includes an air-conditioned waiting room and cloak room. A laundry centre, refreshment stall, beauty parlour, boot polishing service and book stall have also been proposed.

According to P. V. Vaidialingam, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, the functioning of the centre has been leased out to a private contractor who is responsible for its maintenance and upkeep. The Railway will directly monitor the progress of the centre on a regular basis, he said.

K.Subramani, supervisor at the centre, said, “Facilities that are not already available at the junction are provided at the centre.” With priority given to maintenance of the building, Mr. Subramani said, “We will try to maintain the centre as good as new, with passenger comfort coming first.” The spacious air-conditioned waiting hall has started to attract passengers already.

Nominal charge

A nominal charge of Rs. 15 is being levied for an hour's use of this waiting hall. A similar AC waiting hall is available on platform number one.

Unlike the waiting hall on platform number one which is open only for valid ticket-holders, the waiting room here can be used by any visitor irrespective of his possessing a train ticket.

R. Arockiadas, a Coimbatore-bound passenger, said, “The room is very spacious and comfortable with the sofas provided.”

Proper upkeep

Impressed by the latest development at the junction here, R. Swetharanyam, a regular traveller said, “Compared to the bathrooms inside the station, the bathrooms here are more spacious. I hope they are maintained well.” The charge for using the bathroom is set at Rs.10.

The fee for depositing luggage at the cloak room is Rs.15 for 24 hours without having to produce a ticket of travel.

The facilities here can be used by the public without producing any ticket.
