New registration numbers for motorised country boats

Coinciding with the end of the fishing ban period, fishermen in Tiruvarur district using motorised country boats have been advised to apply for new registration number for their vessels by June 14.

Hitherto, the boats were registered at the office of the Assistant Director, Fisheries, Thanjavur district, under ‘IND-TN-07-MO-...’ series. Now, a separate registration series has been assigned for Tiruvarur district ‘IND-TN-20-MO-...’ since the office of the Assistant Director, Fisheries, Tiruvarur, will hereafter maintain the record of motorised country vessels owned by the fishermen in Tiruvarur district.

A total of 213 country boats fitted with motors are operated in Tiruvarur district that has a coastline of 47.2 km. About 2,911 fishermen families reside in 13 fishermen settlements, official sources said.

Prior to assigning the new registration number series for Tiruvarur district, only 175 fishermen had registered their vessels with the Thanjavur Fisheries AD office.

Since any craft used for fishing has to be registered as per the Tamil Nadu Marine Fisheries Regulation Act, the fishermen have been advised to get their vessels registered within June 14 so that they can carry on fishing once the ban gets lifted, the sources added.
