Namma toilet, which has made inroads across the cities and towns in the State, has been selected as best sanitary practice to be demonstrated at a congregation of senior urban development officials of various States and Central government, Mayors and chairmen of various corporations and municipalities in New Delhi on Friday.

The Namma toilet, one of the flagship programmes of the State government, was initially launched at Srirangam in Tiruchi Corporation and Tambaram in 2012-13 on a pilot basis. Following good response, the scheme was extended to other cities in Tamil Nadu. As on date, 210 Namma toilets have been established in various cities.

G. Prakash, Director, Municipal Administration, who is in New Delhi to attend the two-day event, told The Hindu that the Namma toilet concept has caught the imagination of urban planners. The Centre had asked the State to make a poster and video presentation on Namma toilet. The concept, which was aimed at elimination of open defecation, was likely to be adopted by various State governments.

The Commissionerate of Municipal Administration designed the Namma toilet for the urban residents of the State, especially the urban poor, after an intensive exercise that was spread over six to eight months.

The toilet module was pre-fabricated in such way that it could be easily installed onsite in short time. The toilet was of a single mould without joints and the interiors are seamless with no sharp edges and corners to avoid dust accumulation. Adequate lighting and motion sensor lighting powered by solar panel were the features of Namma toilets, he said.
