Students of the Government Music School gave a musical thanksgiving to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa here on Tuesday for granting a stipend of Rs. 200 per month to all students in similar institutions.
Conveying their gratitude in the best possible manner they knew, through music and playing instruments, the students numbering around 40 and accompanied by the Principal of the Karur Government Music School Devika Rani and other teachers, came in a procession to the Collectorate to hand over a letter of appreciation and thanks addressed to the Chief Minister congratulating her and thanking her for the timely financial support.
The letter was handed over to the District Collector V. Shobhana who promised to forward the same to the Chief Minister's office.
Speaking on the move, Deputy Director of Art and Culture R. Gunasekaran said that the Chief Minister had announced the stipend of Rs. 200 per month for each of the 996 students undergoing training in various music art forms in the government music schools all over the State a few days ago in the State Assembly.
The move would help attract more students join the government music schools and support the cause of monetarily weak students who form the majority of the strength in the institutions, he said. Courses including those on kuralisai, Thevaram, mridangam, thavil, nagaswaram, bharathanatyam and the like were being taught at the Government Music Schools. On successful completion of the three year courses certificates are being issued to the eligible candidates.
