An M.Tech student was murdered by an armed gang while he was playing on a ground at Navalpat on the outskirts on Thursday evening.

Of the eight accused named by Navalpat police, two of them – Jothibasu and Justin - were arrested. The main accused, Saravanan, and five others are on the run. The deceased, Miller K. Mandela, was studying in an engineering college at Vallam in Thanjavur district.

Police sources said Miller had warned Saravanan to keep off his friend’s sister Stephy whom the latter had loved before getting married to another woman.

Miller intervened after Stephy’s brother, presently abroad, called him and conveyed about Saravanan’s act of following his sister even after marriage.

Enraged over Miller’s warning, Saravanan along with his associates came in a car and two motorcycles to the ground, when the former and his friends were playing.

The gang stabbed Miller and injured his friend S. Sridhar.

With severe bleeding, Miller was taken to the hospital. But, he died on way.

Navalpat police have registered a case under various IPC sections, including 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), and 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapon).
