A traffic diversion enforced by the Traffic Police recently at Shastri Road-Thennur High Road intersection here has raised the hackles of motorists as they are made to take a detour needlessly via narrow service roads through a residential colony.

The diversion, implemented over the past few weeks, forces vehicles to go via a narrow service lane beneath the Thennur road overbridge (ROB) and take an acute turn towards Sivaprakasam Salai. The Sivaprakasam Salai, which leads towards Anna Nagar Link Road, is a narrow road stretch running through a thickly populated residential area with at least two acute bends and blind spots where motorists face problems sighting oncoming vehicles – one ahead of Thennur Tangedco Office and another near Vinayagar Temple. Multi-axle vehicles, tourist buses and trucks find it very difficult to negotiate the curves, triggering traffic snarls.

Steel beams erected by the police at the Thennur Road intersection to prevent heavy vehicles from going straight were knocked down by unwary motorists on a couple of occasions already. Yet, the police continue to enforce the diversion by placing steel barricades on the road. But very often, whenever there is no traffic police around, many go around the barricades to avoid taking the detour, posing a grave danger to motorists coming in the opposite direction.

The move was enforced by the Traffic Police apparently to reduce the congestion at the Shastri Road-Thennur High Road intersection beneath the Thennur ROB. But residents and motorists complain that the diversion has been introduced needlessly as the traffic flow was relatively smooth at this junction.

For several years now, they point out, the traffic diversion was enforced only during the opening and closing hours of the two schools located near the intersection. “The arrangement was working fine all these years. While the diversion during the school hours was justified, the police move to make it permanent is totally uncalled for.

The diversion has only compounded the problem as many buses and trucks get stuck at the narrow service lanes and in front of Ukkirakaliamman Temple, in front of which a large number of devotees park their vehicles every day,” rued N. Jamaludeen, a resident of Anna Nagar, and urged the police to do away with the diversion.

Motorists complain that the narrow service lane and Sivaprakasam Salai are not wide enough to accommodate two-way traffic on a permanent basis. Many do not anticipate on-coming vehicles while taking a turn from Shastri Road and also near the Vinayagar Temple.

A large number of vehicles are also parked along the service lane and also along Sivaprakasam Salai, residents and motorists say. “A major accident is waiting to happen at the acute bend near the Vinayagar Temple-Kannadasan Road intersection as vehicles pick up speed at this point. Residents from Anna Nagar also exit the colony at high speed,” cautioned N.Kuppan Chetti, another resident. The road in front of the Hindu Mission Hospital has also been badly damaged, he points out.

Residents of the locality have now been forced to bear with noise and dust pollution round-the-clock due to continuous movement of buses and heavy vehicles, he says, Some residents also express apprehensions over children walking that narrow road leading to Anna Nagar, where many of them used to be play there.
