The office of the motor vehicle inspector constructed at Thuraiyur, a unit of the Regional Transport Officer in Srirangam, is yet to be inaugurated.

The building has been constructed on the outskirts of the town on the Thuraiyur – Musiri highway, about six km from Thuraiyur.

The fact that there is not even a pathway or road to access the office speaks volumes about the nature of the isolated area where the office is located.

According to sources, residents of Thuraiyur, prior to 2008, had to go to Srirangam to register their vehicles or renew their licenses. As many as 30,000 vehicles had been registered so far in the last six years at the Thuraiyur office.

The office was sanctioned in December 2008 and has been functioning in a private building in the town.

It facilitates registration of new vehicles, renewal of licenses and other transport-related works except the issue of permits, which is vested with the office of the Regional Transport Officer.

The opening of the MV office at Thuraiyur had come as a boon. Yet residents say that the building should have been constructed in the town.

However, transport department sources said that it was usual for the department to construct new buildings on the outskirts of the town.

Citing the instances in Perambalur and Tiruchi, they said that the public would be used to utilise the service once the building was opened.
