A day after a five-year-old girl died after being severely beaten up, Kattuputhur Police on Tuesday arrested the child’s mother Nithyakamala and her partner D. Muthupandian on the charge of murdering the minor.

The minor girl, who sustained multiple bruises after being severely thrashed allegedly by the duo, died at Salem Government Hospital on Monday after being referred there.

According to police, Nithyakamala separated from her husband Prasanna a few years ago and was allegedly in a relationship with Muthupandian. The girl was born to Nithyakamala and Prasanna, said the police.

A native of Alagirigoundanur village in Dindigul district, Muthupandian, who had been working as a physical education teacher in a private school, was without a job. He and Nithyakamala had recently taken a house on rent at Kattuputhur in Tiruchi district.

Nithyakamala, who was a postgraduate in computer applications, earlier worked in a private college at Dindigul.

Police sources said Muthupandian and Nithyakamala felt that the child was an obstacle to their happy living and allegedly committed the murder. The girl was severely beaten with PVC pipes and coconut stems allegedly by Nithyakamala and Muthupandian in their house at Kattuputhur on Monday causing multiple bruises on her body.

On receipt of information regarding the girl's death, a police team went to Salem Government Hospital to conduct inquiry. After a detailed probe, the police arrested Muthupandian and Nithyakamala on the charge of murdering the girl.

Kattuputhur Police registered a case of murder, said the police.
