The Railway administration has proposed to eliminate more unmanned level crossings in Tiruchi Railway Division either by manning them or constructing limited use subways.

The Tiruchi Division has a total number of 171 unmanned level crossings out of which 59 were proposed to be manned; 15 others to be diverted and the remaining would be eliminated through construction of limited use subways, said Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, P. Uday Kumar Reddy.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday on the occasion of International Level Crossing Awareness Day, Mr. Reddy said there was no accident reported in the unmanned level crossings in Tiruchi division.

Replying to a query, Mr. Reddy said the double line laid in the stretch from Valadi to Golden Rock railway station near Tiruchi had been commissioned.

With doubling works in the entire stretch from Villupuram to Tiruchi having been completed and commissioned, the speed of the trains would increase benefiting passengers, Mr. Reddy said.

Earlier, he inaugurated a rally at Tiruchi railway junction to create awareness among the public regarding safety measures to adhere to while passing through unmanned crossings.

Officers and staff of various departments of Tiruchi Division, students from various schools and colleges, NSS volunteers and those from service organisations took part in the rally.
