The Case Identification Unit (CIU) has identified 4,210 litigations for conciliation at the National Lok Adalat to be held on July 13.
Disclosing this to reporters here on Thursday, the Additional District Judge-II, B. Rajavel, said that the CIUs in each court coming under the jurisdiction of the District Court, Thanjavur, have identified such cases based on their progress and have referred the same to the District Legal Services Authority for suitable action at their end.
Thus, the litigants were asked to appear before the conciliation officers at the DLSA a week or 10 days before the date fixed for conducting Lok Adalat, where a compromise could be reached to settle the dispute and the decree could be passed on the Lok Adalat day. A total of 2,200 cases have been settled during the Lok Adalat held in April this year, he added.
Listing out the type of cases that could be settled in Lok Adalats, the Mahila Court Judge, M. Ezhilarasi said even the disputes between banks and their customers for which legal course of remedy was yet to be initiated could also be brought to the Lok Adalat for settlement as the decree issued at the Lok Adalat was final and not eligible for appeal in the higher courts.
The Additional District Judge-II said that in Thanjavur district a large number of civil cases have been settled through Lok Adalats. The litigants who have failed to arrive at a conciliation during a Lok Adalat exercise, could approach the Court or the DLSA later to settle the dispute amicably during the subsequent Lok Adalats, he added.
As of now, little over 28,000 cases are being heard in different Courts in Thanjavur district, said the secretary, DLSA, Sub-Judge, P. Sudha.
