Consent of school dept. mandatory

The School Education department is keeping a close watch on kindergarten play schools in the district with a view to regulating their functioning.

In the wake of a government decision to offer pre-primary classes under Montessori system through anganwadis in phases, the department wants to drive home the message that kindergarten play schools functioning without permission will face the music.

“There are instances of play schools functioning in cramped conditions that were ordered to be closed. All play schools will have to secure the approval of the School Education department to continue functioning,” Chief Educational Officer S. Shanthi said.

Primary teachers have welcomed the Ministry of Human Resource Development’s move to bring pre-primary education under its purview. “Some kind of regulation of pre-primary education has been long overdue,” an elementary school teacher said.

The aim is to ensure that children in the age group of three to six years are prepared well for schooling in the wake of complaints of inadequacies in curriculum, lack of trained educators, and shortcomings in pedagogy.

The inclusion of pre-primary education under the purview of MHRD has been recommended in the draft National Education Policy. The draft policy envisages expansion of anganwadi system and co-locating them with primary schools.

In Tiruchi district, admissions to LKG and UKG have been made in about 88 anganwadi centres attached to middle schools.

The surplus teachers of government and government-aided primary schools, who have been posted to the anganwadis, are expected to undergo a crash course of the State Council for Educational Research and Training.
