Minister instructs Aavin to open more cooperative milk societies in villages

Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development N.R.Sivapathi on Saturday instructed officials of the Tiruchi District Cooperative Milk Producers Union (Aavin) to initiate steps to increase milk production.

Mr.Sivapathi, who inspected the milk processing unit of Aavin in the city along with Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, instructed the officials to open more cooperative milk societies, especially in villages where there was none. In addition, steps should be taken to step up supply of nutritious cattle feed.

3 lakh litres daily

Currently, the Union was procuring about three lakh litres of milk a day from cooperative societies in Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts.

While about 1.3 lakh litres was sold locally, about 1.60 lakh litres was being sent to Chennai every day.

This apart, about 15,000 litres was being marketed in Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts and about 20,000 litres was being sent for manufacture of milk products such as milk powder and milk khoa.

P.Kumar, MP, R.Manoharan and T.Indira Gandhi, MLAs, T.S.Sundara Mahalingam, General Manager, Aavin, and other officials were present.
