Minister declares open expo, urges people to patronise khadi goods

G.Baskaran, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, declared open an exhibition of khadi products here on Tuesday.

He said that khadi products worth ₹ 195 crore were produced through 70 sarvodaya sanghs and Khadi and Village Industries Board every year in the State providing livelihood to nearly 15,000 weavers and artisans. He urged people to patronise khadi products.

S.Valarmathi, Minister for Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, said the expo had 75 stalls and 30% rebate was being offered.

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Tiruchi North Sarvodaya Sangh, organised the expo. It will remain open from 10 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. every day till October 15 at Makkal Mandram at Thillai Nagar in the city.

Meanwhile, Collector S. Sivarasu inaugurated special discount sale of Khadi and Village Industries products at the Khadi Kraft showroom here on Wednesday.

He said the Tamil Nadu Khadi and Village Industries Board’s production centres were providing job to rural artisans and weavers. He urged people to patronise khadi products at showrooms near Tiruchi Junction or Manapparai and stalls set up at Tiruchi Corporation office, Manachanallur, Tiruverumbur and Andhanallur and support weavers. Earlier, he garlanded the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Municipal Office Road, Cantonment.

Officials said 30% discount is being given to silk saris, polyester and other khadi products while woollen products will be given 20% discount until Deepavali. Government officials and workers in local bodies can purchase items and repay in 10 instalments. The sales target at the khadi showrooms in Tiruchi district has been fixed at ₹ 68.54 lakhs this year.

Pudukottai

Collector P. Uma Maheswari inaugurated the sale at the Khadi Kraft outlet after paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi. A sales target of ₹1.31 crore has been fixed for the district.

Perambalur

Collector V. Santha paid floral tribute to Gandhi sStatue near the old bus stand and inaugurated sale at Khadi Kraft. Last year, goods worth ₹7.50 lakh were sold in the district. Sale of products worth ₹20 lakhs is expected this year.

Ariyalur

Chief Government Whip Thamarai S. Rajendran inaugurated the sale here. He said Tamil Nadu was forerunner in sale and production of Khadi goods in the country. The board provides financial support for education, wedding, maternity and accidents in the family of weavers. Collector T. G. Vinay was present.

Nagapattinam

Collector Praveen P. Nair inaugurated the sale here. He urged people to purchase and wear Khadi products.

Thanjavur

Collector A.Annadurai inaugurated the Deepavali sales at the Khadi and Village Industries retail outlet here on Wednesday as part of the Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations in this district. He said the Deepavali sale target for the KVI in Thanjavur, Tirvarur and Nagapattinam districts had been fixed at ₹ 93.24 lakh as against the last year’s target of ₹90 lakh. Dress and other materials made up of khadi, silk and polyester-kadhi and woollen products were available for sale at the showroom with a rebate of 20 % for woollen products and 30 % for other products.

Meanwhile, around 3000 saplings were planted in the Peravurani Town Panchayat area on Wednesday as part of the Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations. The saplings were planted at the public places and at places of worships in all 18 wards, says a release.
