Mini textile parks: Collector to meet entrepreneurs

The district administration will showcase government support, infrastructure and opportunities available to investors and entrepreneurs for setting up mini textile parks in Tiruchi district.

Collector S. Sivarasu has convened a consultative meeting with investors and entrepreneurs on November 19 to explain the government scheme for setting up of mini textile parks with 50% subsidy for creating infrastructure for such parks.

The scheme envisages establishment of mini textile parks with at least three production units on a minimum area of two acres.

Subsidy

The government, through the Handlooms and Textiles department, will make available subsidy to the extent of 50% with a maximum ceiling of ₹2.5 crore under the project for infrastructure such as roads, lighting and other amenities.

Although industry representatives say there is good scope for promoting such mini parks, there has been a lukewarm response to the scheme which has not been availed over the past four years, official sources rue.

For instance, Puthanatham near Manapparai has earned a name for itself for readymade garment manufacturing.

The units in the village, located about 17 km away from Manapparai town, have specialised in making, shirts, churidars and children's apparel.

However, officials say, most of them are small-time entrepreneurs who cannot manage to mobilise huge investments to the tune of ₹5 crore.

With subsidy being offered only for infrastructure under the scheme, there are not many takers in the district, they said.
