Man held for marrying off minor daughter

The Musiri All Women Police arrested a 35-year-old man on the charge of marrying off his minor daughter at Keezhapallam near Musiri on Saturday.

The accused Durairaj was arrested on a complaint lodged by the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) S. Usha.

The police are on the lookout for the groom, Chelladurai (41), a labourer, besides the minor girl and her mother Dhanakodi. Chelladurai was already married and has a daughter.

The issue came to light after Chelladurai’s wife Gandhimathi preferred a petition to the DSWO recently complaining that her husband had married a minor girl of the same village a few months ago.

Acting on the complaint, the DSWO conducted enquiries with the mother who reportedly gave conflicting replies.

After the parents failed to produce the girl, the DSWO lodged a complaint with the Musiri All Women Police station where a case was booked against Durairaj, his wife Dhanakodi and Chelladurai.

The case was booked under IPC section 366-A (Procuration of minor girl) and sections 9, 10 and 11 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

Police sources said the whereabouts of the victim girl, her mother, and Chelladurai were not known.
