Malpractices in goods measurement

CBI to launch investigation at Tiruchi yard

May 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The Central Bureau of Investigation has launched a probe into under-measurement of goods at the Tiruchi railway goods yard.

The electronic weighbridge installed at the yard is no longer in use as the equipment’s software is suspected to have been tampered with for under-reporting weight of goods transported by wagons.

Top railway officials confirmed that the electronic weighbridge supplied by a private company was not being used at the goods yard and the room housing the equipment had been sealed.

Out of use for 2 months

The electronic weighbridge has been out of use for nearly two months now after the Southern Railway Vigilance Department suspected that the equipment’s software had been manipulated to favour certain private parties sending materials through wagons.

Consequent to the sealing of the weighbridge, goods were being weighed at various places en route. — R. Rajaram
