Madurai-Tirupathi Express halts at six more stations

The Madurai-Tirupathi-Madurai Express trains would be halting at six more stations in each direction from July 1, following the decision of the Railway Board.

The travelling public has widely welcomed the decision and has thanked the Railways for the same. This train will now halt at Kodaikanal Road, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Sirkazhi, Chidambaram and Tiruvannamalai on a trial basis from July 1.

The decision follows persistent demand from people in the central region.

The train number 16780 Madurai-Tirupathi Express will leave Madurai Junction on Thursdays and Saturdays and the train number 16779 Tirupathi-Madurai Express will leave Tirupathi on Fridays and Sundays.

On its arrival at Kumbakonam Railway Station on Saturday night the Madurai-Tirupathi Express was accorded a rousing reception by various traders' organisations, and rail user association.

Led by Aathiyan Chettiar, president of the Confederation of All Industries and Traders Association, a large number of people welcomed and garlanded the train at Kumbakonam Railway Station.

It may be recalled that the Madurai-Tirupathi Express was re-introduced on the main line on March 31 following the completion of the BG conversion works between Villupuram and Vellore Cantonment Station.

Failure to stop the train in major stations like Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, and Chidambaram, led to strong protest.

The new halts for Madurai-Tirupathi Express train are Kodaikanal Road (Departure time: 7.50 p.m.), Kumbakonam (11.20 p.m.), Mayiladuthurai (11.49 p.m.), Sirkazhi (12.13 a.m.), Chidambaram (12.35 a.m.) and Tiruvannamalai (3.35 a.m.).
