The Southern Railway is observing Level Crossing Awareness Week commencing Monday in connection with the International Level Crossing Awareness Day observed on June 3. A special safety drive would be conducted by the Safety branch of the Tiruchi division, according to a Southern Railway press release. The Tiruchi division has 540 level crossings, of which 350 are manned and 190 are unmanned. The Southern Railway has already proposed to eliminate 60 unmanned level crossings during the financial year by converting six of them into subways and 51 into manned level crossings, the release said.
Green houses with solar lamps built
Two hundred and forty-three green houses with solar lamps have been built for the benefit of weavers in the district over the past couple of years, Collector K.S.Palanisamy said. During 2013-14, 133 green houses were provided and during 2014-15 another 110 green houses were built for weavers. Each house has been built at a cost of Rs.2.10 lakh including Rs.30,000 meant for the installation of solar power units, he said after inspecting a green house at Kolakudi and Manamedu .
