“E-learning can be effectively used”

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has given birth to new ideas and opened new avenues such as e-learning and virtual university that could be effectively used in schools and in higher education today, D.N. Sansanwal, chairperson, Northern Regional Committee, National Council for Teacher Education, said on Saturday.

ICT could be used in areas including teaching, diagnostic teaching, remedial teaching, psychological testing, evaluation and development of reasoning and thinking, Mr. Sansanwal said at the valedictory of the international conference on “eResources in Higher Education: Issues, Developments, Opportunities and Challenges” organised by the Department of Educational Technology and Department of Library and Information Science, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, here. In addition to providing access to different sources of up-to-date information on various subjects, ICT provides flexibility to learners thereby enabling them to understand better, he said. In the present scenario, it was essential to develop reasoning and thinking among students by giving them exercises at regular intervals. Teaching at school and higher education levels should not be confined to merely providing information but must also aim at developing expression power among students besides developing their reasoning and thinking, development of judgment and decision making, improving comprehension and vocabulary.

The Registrar, Bharathidasan University, T. Ramaswamy, delivered the presidential address. P.V. Konnur, Librarian and Head, Department of Information Technology, Bangalore University, presented the conference report. The organising secretary E. Ramganesh welcomed the gathering and S. Srinivasaragavan, conference secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.
