The Tamil Nadu Prison Department has renovated the sub-jail at Lalgudi in the district.

The renovated sub-jail has 20 cells, including a cell exclusively meant to accommodate transgenders. Prison authorities said the renovation works were carried out by the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation at a cost ₹ 20 lakh.

A dormitory has been constructed inside the sub-jail as part of renovation. A new compound wall with barbed wire has been erected around the sub-jail. The refurbished sub-jail, which can accommodate 43 prisoners, was opened recently.

The sub-jail is headed by a jail official in the rank of an Assistant Jailor with Chief Head Warders, Head Warders and other jail personnel deployed there. Presently, a few remand prisoners have been lodged, said the authorities.

The authorities said proposals had been forwarded to the State government to renovate the sub-jails at Musiri in Tiruchi district and Kulithalai in Karur district.
