It will be redeveloped at a cost of ₹17.47 crore under the Smart City Mission

The Kamaraj Market in the town would soon be relocated to facilitate its redevelopment under the Smart City Mission.

The market would temporarily function at the SPCA grounds near Cauvery Nagar on Pudukottai Road from November 8. A public notification to this effect has been put up at the market complex by the Thanjavur Corporation.

Situated adjacent to the Thanjavur Maratha Palace, the market was originally built by the erstwhile Nayak rulers of Thanjavur. The facility is spread over an area of about 4.25 acres and accommodates 93 shops with traders selling vegetables and fruits.

The Thanjavur Smart City Limited, a special purpose vehicle, has planned to redevelop the Kamaraj Market and the Serfoji Market in the town under the Smart City Mission.

While the Kamaraj Market is planned to be demolished and redeveloped at an investment of ₹17.47 crore, the existing Serfoji Market would also be dismantled to make way for a new market that would come up at an estimated cost of ₹14.59 crore.

The busy Kamaraj Market is characterised by narrow approaches and small shops, making for congestion.

The approach roads were also long occupied by hawkers.

The old structure is to be demolished and the market is to be rebuilt with 211 shops with proper access and passage ways. The new market would have shops at the ground level, office spaces and toilets on the first floor. Separate parking lots for lorries, four-wheelers and two-wheelers are also to be created.

Corporation Commissioner Janaki Ravindran said the redevelopment project would be completed in 16 months.

She indicated that the work on the redevelopment of the Serfoji Market is likely to begin next month after shifting the traders to a temporary location. The Serfoji Market, also known as Keezhavasal Market situated on the Anna Salai in the old town area, houses about 350 shops on an area of about 2.4 acres. This market is also located in a congested and busy commercial location in the heart of the town. The new market would have 309 shops, besides toilets, storm water drains, lighting and other amenities.

Work has already begun on the redevelopment of the Old Bus Stand and the Thiruvaiyaru bus stand under the Smart City Mission.
