Temporary bus stops announced to facilitate redevelopment of Chathram Bus Stand

Confusion prevailed near Chathram Bus Stand on Monday morning as traffic diversions were enforced to facilitate the redevelopment of the bus stand under the Smart City Mission.

The traffic police had announced that temporary bus stops would function along College Road and Karur Road after the bus stand was closed.

However, during peak hours on Monday morning, traffic on Karur Road came to a standstill as both bus drivers and passengers were uncertain of the stopping points. “I have been waiting here for a while to get on a bus to go to my college in Vayalur. Although there are several buses, today there is no bus in sight,” said M. Roshini, a student.

“A small white paper has been pasted on barricades so passengers can wait there. Maybe they can see it, but sitting in the bus, we are unable to do so,” said a bus driver. The drivers had not been given any instructions on the new bus stops, he added.

The traffic police announced that city buses heading to Thuvakudi will stop on College Road in front of St Joseph College. Passengers heading to Woraiyur and Puthur will now have to board buses near Lalithaa Jewellery entrance while buses to Lalgudi will commence from Karur road.

Those heading to Srirangam will get buses in front of Vasantha Bhavan Hotel while Manachanallur-bound buses will start their trips opposite to Ramba Oorvasi Theatre. Buses to Central Bus Stand, Vayalur, will start in front of Indira Gandhi College.

The traffic diversions are expected to be in effect until the completion of the redevelopment project in 2021. The project, undertaken under the Smart City Mission would cost ₹17.39 crore and would boast several facilities, including food courts.

“Some confusion, especially on the first day of the diversions, is to be expected. As the public gets used to it, the system would get streamlined,” said a traffic policeman stationed near the bus stand.

Meanwhile, the city police on Monday announced some changes in the traffic diversions effective Tuesday. Buses operating on Kallanai route from Chathram bus stand would halt near Anna Statue.

Buses bound for K. K. Nagar, Inamkulathur and Manikandam would depart in front of Indira Gandhi College and buses to Kuzhumani would halt near Lalithaa Jewellery a press release from the police department said.

The police also stressed that permission for protests and demonstrations near Anna statue roundabout would not be given until completion of the redevelopment work.
