Kurta may be a less popular dress in the State. But, it has, all of a sudden, gained popularity, thanks to the International Yoga Day.
Since many of the city schools have insisted that the children turn up in kurtas today for doing yoga exercises, the parents, accompanied by their children, flocked the leading apparel outlets hunting for kurtas in the last few days.
Many parents had to visit more than two or three stores to select specific colours insisted by the schools.
Stating that there was a sharp increase in demand for kuta and kurtis, textile merchants said they had never come across such a huge demand for the dress, which was popular in North India.
S. Jayaraman of Westside said that his outlet had seen drastic increase in footfalls as customers were looking for kurta and kurtis in the last few days.
There were reports that most of the readymade garment showrooms in the city were flocked by schoolchildren to buy kurtas.
