High drama prevailed at Arunachalam Mandram, housing the offices of Tiruchi district Congress Committee in the city, following a verbal clash between the supporters of TNCC president S. Thirunavukarasar and former Minister P. Chidambaram-E. V. K. S. Elangovan on Thursday.

According to sources, the supporters of Mr. Chidambaram and Mr. Elangovan led by former district presidents R .C. Babu and Jerome Arockiaraj had planned to hold a meeting of Tiruchi District Congress Committee (South) at the Arunachalam Mandram to register their anguish over the reported move to appoint new comers of the Congress as block presidents by replacing the incumbents. As per the plan, they had gone to the party office. But, the gate was closed in order to thwart the attempts of Chidambaram faction.

The problem started when a section of them forcibly opened the gate to gain entry into the party office. District Congress Committee presidents Govindaraj (south) and Jawahar (urban) and others opposed the conduct of the meeting without their prior approval, leading to heated exchange of words. On information, the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
