Brightly-lit cinema halls and shopping malls are always a visitors’ delight and it’s no surprise to see a group of special children elated at their visit to the Femina Hyper Mall here on Monday.

The special programme for mentally-retarded children was hosted jointly by the mall management and the Department of Rehabilitation Science of Holy Cross College. In all, 120 boys and girls from Blossom School, a special school, went around the shopping area of the mall. “We saw a marked change in his attitude and we could feel his delight,” said N.Saravanan, father of S.Vignesh Kumar, a special child.

“Every mentally-retarded child has a thirst for recreation and entertainment, and parents should realise this,” said Sister Lourde Mary, Associate Professor, and Uma Kanegala, Assistant Professor, of the department. Vivid colour attracts these children, said Turin Martina, a faculty member. The children felt immense joy when the stepped on the escalator installed at the mall, he said.

Mohamed Abubaker, managing director of the mall, said that special arrangements were made for the visit.
