Govt. school receives ISO certification

The Government Higher Secondary School in remote Kavarapatti village in Viralimalai taluk has achieved the distinction of being the first government school in the district to bag ISO 9001:2015 certification.

The certificate was given to the school, which was upgraded as a higher secondary institution in July 2008, for “providing quality education to students from VI to XII standard as per Tamil Nadu State Government educational curriculum”.

Ahead of granting the certification, a team from the New Delhi-based certifying agency Aambitious Assessment Private Limited conducted detailed audits multiple times at the school checking a host of aspects including students enrolment, methods adopted for teaching, lesson plan, syllabus, ways students were being prepared for examinations, basic infrastructure, stability of the buildings and the surrounding environment besides the attendance register.

“During the course of their inspections five to six times, the team members from the certifying agency spent nearly a day each time closely examining all aspects and interacted with the students as well as teachers,” the school headmaster, R. Sivakumar, told The Hindu.

Spread over six acres, the school today caters to the educational needs of boys and girls of nearly 20 remote villages in its vicinity. The student strength of this co-educational school now is 769, including 381 girls, with 30 dedicated teachers handling different subjects from VI to XII standards.

It was started as an elementary school as early as in 1949 only to be upgraded as a middle school 30 years later in 1979. It was upgraded as a high school in 2002 prior to becoming a higher secondary school in July 2008.

“A vast majority of our students are first generation learners, which prompted us to take extra care in their academic pursuit”, said Mr. Sivakumar, who has been heading the school from June 2012.

The school has put in place a system of identifying average and slow learners so as to concentrate more on such students, said Mr. Sivakumar, who has bagged the National Best Teacher award.

There have been occasions when special classes were arranged in the night for identified average and slow learners in the school after obtaining permission from their parents. Teachers too came forward to hold such classes for students, who were provided with food , said Mr. Sivakumar.

The whole idea was to provide individual care and bring them up to the level of those who were good in academics. This is the first government school in Pudukottai district to have received the prestigious ISO certification, says Mr. Sivakumar.

The government school has also been actively fostering the innate talents of rural students by installing a “creativity box” at the institution. Poems penned by students are dropped in the creativity box and the best ones are picked up weekly and read out during the prayer session.

The school also has a smart classroom equipped with overhead projector and audio visual content in tune with latest developments. The overall pass percentage in Plus Two examinations have been 99 in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar, hailing from Pudukottai district, accompanied by Collector P. Uma Maheswari visited the school recently and appreciated it for obtaining ISO certification.
